PLOT:
Beth arrives at the Dodds household and convinces Rachel's father to let her into the house to check on Rachel. Unfortunately as they open the door to Rachel's room, Beth's worst fears are confirmed as the Mendo-infected Rachel tries to attack them.
They are eventually
able to restrain Rachel but not before she almost rips her father's intestines out. Mr. Dodd survives thanks to medical attention from Beth but the two are unsure what if anything can be done for Rachel.
Meanwhile, the Geo-Populus cult takes the infected and sedated Senator Moss to his father's house where he asks to see his father's most prized
possession, an original manuscript of Melville's "Moby Dick." Senator Moss's father, a former Governor had given
explicit instructions that no one was to be allowed access to the manuscript. However given the Senator's blood relation, the estate's caretaker is willing to make an exception.
The caretaker is shocked then when the Senator begins ripping out the binding of the book and procuring a key hidden behind the spine. The man's screams are quickly silenced when Senator Moss extends his arm, revealing a hidden pistol, and fires a single bullet into the caretaker's skull.
Moss turns over the key to the Geo-Populus member escorting him and he too is given a bullet to the skull for his efforts. The entire estate's staff is executed one by one
and the mansion is then lit on fire. The cult member phones the rest of the Geo-Populus to inform them of the mission's success before making his way to the Mayor's mansion to begin the evening's ritual.
Also on their way to the Mayor's mansion are Simon and Detective Tom Kirk. Along the way, Simon relays the information he was able to take from the low level thugs at the soap factory.
Simon explains that the Geo-Populus cult is mostly comprised of imps inhabiting the bodies of humans. There are also a few medium-sized demons in the group who only look human (namely Vincent and the Mayor). Simon goes
onto say that like most demon cults, they are headed up by a high-ranking member of society who has the capability of regulating the flow of traffic between the planes of existence. The Mayor of Gotham City
has been pulling over more and more demons lately and no one was sure why - until now.
The Mendo Soap experiment was just the beginning. By feeding off of the fear produced by the infection, the Geo-Populus are using the experiment as a test case.
A preliminary round of fear meant to
prepare the way for something larger - a demon powerful enough to swallow the city whole in one night!
At the Mayor's Mansion, the Mayor is pleased to receive the key. Unfortunately for the members responsible, their praise is short lived as they are soon punished for their
failure to kill the Mendo delivery truck driver. As their brethren watch their painful demise on television, the Mayor informs Mr. Shannon that Vincent's duties are to be reassigned as he has been promoted
to a new assignment.
Outside the mansion, Tom receives word from Beth of Rachel's condition. He decides against telling Simon and instead focuses on their mission at hand - stopping the Geo-Populus cult by locking down the main chamber and closing their portal forever.
