People have complained about SUPERMAN RETURNS. Not the idea of a restart or anything on that. But the story, the actor, and the costume. Now I want to make my point on why this film won't be bad:
First; you would have to remember the times in the '90s, as seen here:
http://www.superh...21&page=1
Wrong scripts, wrong actors, wrong directors, wrong feel, wrong pitches, wrong, wrong! WRONG!
Second; the internet. Before, studios like WB had the only things to see if the film that was recently released made by them was good: certain reviews, and money coming back. Another thing was for franchises only like Superman and Batman from companies like McDonalds that were supporting the film(s) and how sales were on their end.
And finally; Bryan Singer.
WB has changed since. They know about us, and they know us being angry means they aren't doing their jobs. The chances of us getting a repeat of sorts of the re-edited BATMAN FOREVER, the horrible BATMAN & ROBIN, and campy SUPERMAN III and the unfinished, ungood SUPERMAN IV: QUEST FOR PEACE or even CATWOMAN seen in SUPERMAN RETURNS is pretty low. Or how about VERY LOW.
And of course, there's the internet. Studios can check on what we thought in forum sites and see more reviews than what they were reading back in the day. That way, they can get the insight from us and what we think even before the films opens, and even when the film is being made. Enough time to make changes if they can be done.
Now: Bryan Singer. The man who gave us Usual Suspects which I saw like a maniac. Apt Pupil which was an interesting movie. But the one series of films and prove he has what it takes; X-MEN!
He has done two X-Men movies and they succeeded in the box office. We were badmouthing X-Men 1 while that was being made and what we said got sent back to us and smack us when the film opened and we were wrong.
And X2: X-MEN UNITED proved what more he could give us in the sequel and was better than the first one.
So to clear this up:
WB knows us and knows its mistakes. They go onto the internet and see what we think on whatever superhero project thats in development by them.
If Bryan Singer's pitch didn't have: the Superman mythos, where the character(s) lay, closer to the source material, chances are they might've passed it. But again, WB knows what we want, and in turn what they want. If Nolan's BATMAN BEGINS was greenlighted because of his younger, new blood approach and treated the character right. I believe Singer's SUPERMAN RETURNS will do the same.
So far the movie from what we know now has these themes:
THE IMMIGRANT THEME - since back in 1938, Superman kinda reflected the Jews leaving their home because it was destroyed, like Superman's home planet, came to the USA and became "ultimate americans" and did "make good". The film uses that in a sense of Superman feeling alone and different since people forgot about him and don't need him.
MYTHOLOGY AND FOLKLORE - Superman as a modern day Moses, basically a God-like being on Earth. That will probably be happening if the rumor based on THE DEATH AND LIFE OF SUPERMAN like the resurrection is true.
HOW WE SEE OURSELVES AS SUPERMAN - The movie's plot touches us through the human element. Not just Superman and Lois' kid, but Richard White as well as a human version of Superman. Besides, how many of you have seen you father, family member, and/or role model as THE SUPERMAN to you?
Continue from there.
You don't get it, boy... this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table.
(crack!)
And I'm the surgeon.

Hmm, very interesting theory. I myself am a lifelong fan of Superman and I don't think this movie will suck. I only hope the baby that Lois has is Superman's (from the love scene in Superman II) and not Cyclops'!

There was a pic in I think US Weekly.. well, it was this one:

It was bright, the cape was red, looked much better.

Boy, that is a dark red. Those boots are like brown. Not bad though.
I didn't realize how thin he was. He's obviously got some good tone, if it can show that much through his costume, but those wrists look as thin as mine.
I'm not sure how I feel about the look. His muscles, costume, hair, etc. It's so hard to make many judgments at this point. I know nothing about the actual plot, and maybe I should just keep it that way and see it in the theatres. It'll probably be funner to go in without a crapload of info and having watched a ten minute preview.

Why not? Christopher Reeve did. They put a bunch of dye and stuff into it. He is pretty much the iconic live action Superman.

Personally I don't think the suit looks that bad. Hey we had a new look for Batman and it worked well for the look and feel of the film and I'm sure that superman's suit will do the same.

i think so far this movie is looking great, the actor looks good, i like the suit its darker i like that. hes got some tone as caleson said because you can see even with the suit on, hes not arnold in a superman suit which is great. hes right in the middle. why would a guy that can pick up a building with relative ease need muscles anyway? so far so good, im looking forwards to this movie

The fact is that you just can't stick a normal Superman suit on a guy and make a Superman movie with a plot based on the comics, with flashy supervillains and the like. Even if it's not right for WB to only be thinking about money, they can't just make what the comics fans want, because, let's face it, we're a minority in the population of casual filmgoers. People will just think Superman looks silly and outdated if his costume is so classical. That's why the project's has been under so much chaos over the last decade. People keep trying to update the man of steel to make him cool again, but they're just failing miserably. Batman fit into the slick, Super Nintendo charged, era of the nineties, but the 'overgrown boy scout' just wasn't hitting the right buttons with kids anymore. Trust me, I'm fifteen, and I'm the only comic book fan in my class and my group of friends. If I was to ask any of them who their favourite superhero was they'd say either Spider-Man because you can relate to him, Wolverine 'cause he's just so goddamn cool, and Batman 'cause he doesn't have powers and he still kicks ass. Bring up Superman and you just get remarks about how he's too powerful and how his costume is gay.
What people don't get is, Superman's supposed to be powerful. He's the major muscle, and the most loving and caring of all superheroes (a word named after him, we must be reminded). I heard a guy from EA Tiburon (the dudes making the new Superman game) who said:
"If it's a job that Batman or Spider-Man or even the Incredible Hulk can handle,
then it's probably not big enough a job for Superman."
In the shadows I saw my destiny...
I would seek justice...
I would have my revenge... |

About the costume: If you've seen the pics on the new site, then you know that the movie has a very specific look thats been described "40s art deco". Thats why Lois has that wavy hair and wears a brown trenchcoat. That's why Clark wears such old fashioned suits. And if you keep this is mind, the costume starts to make more sense. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I think the costume just has more a forties-ish feel to it, which is exactly how its supposed to look.

I love the darker colors on the new costume. My only complaint is that the S shield needs to be bigger. The costume reminds me of Bermejo's rendition of Superman, and that is a very good thing. Bryan Singer is one of the best directors alive, and I feel the movie is in very good hands. Superman's film legacy is safe, as far as I'm concerned.
