Sorry if there is already a similar thread that is already in existence on BYTB.
Anyways I thought it would be cool to post a thread dealing with CD reviews and recommendations. Bought a new cd? want to share your opinions? Post up a review. The cd's do not have to be newly released and can be from any point in the past. If you don't have a review then just post up a recommendation of cd's you enjoy or that you think others will enjoy. This way people can learn of bands they may not know of and can expand there taste in music.
I'll get the ball rolling by posting my review of Chevelle's new cd "Vena Sera" which came out today (April 3rd).
Vena Sera picks off right where Chevelle left off with This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In). Filled with thrashing guitars and a steady bass & drum combo, Chevelle accomplishes its goal in creating a refreshing album that will please fans both new and old. This album also includes a bonus track (sleep walking elite) that should have made the tracklist as it is a solid edition and is better then a few of the songs on the album. The majority of this CD makes shame to their previous efforts (save a few songs on TTOT and Wonder What's Next), making it a must buy for all chevelle fans. Trust me, they won't disappoint.
Hits: Saferwaters, The Fad, Straight Jacket Fashion, Sleepwalking Elite (bonus track), Midnight to Midnight, and I Get It are instant classics and will remain permenant fixtures on your playlists
Misses: Saturdays. Although it is a good song, it could have been better. It is somewhat bland and not as satisfying as the rest of the CD.
Overall: This cd is worth every penny. It's full of songs that will keep your head banging and has choruses that will remain in your head for a long time to come.
Best listened to: When you're looking for hard rock music with an edge
Other Recommendations:
- Breaking Benjamin "Phobia"
- Three Days Grace "One - X"
- 30 Seconds to Mars "A Beautiful Lie"
- Tupelo Honey "Tupelo Honey EP"
- HourCast "State of Disgrace"
anyone else?

A good idea for a thread - I'm not sure we have a big amount of avid music fans. I reviewed some of my recent CD buys in the Critique Food & Other Products thread, including Pearl Jam's self-titled record, Tool's 10,000 Days, and Fuel's Natural Selection. If this doesn't get much attention, I can move our discussion into that...
I have 30 Seconds to Mars' debut album from 2002 and really enjoy it for its snyth rock and sci-fi elements. I have a feeling I won't like their new album as much though. The first single got very annoying with the way overdone screaming. It reminds me of a small child screaming to his mom repeatedly. But while the music video was completely idiotic, I did enjoy "From Yesterday." I just have a bad feeling they're leaning toward more of a pop emo sound now.
I have Chevelle's first two albums and enjoy them, especially Wonder What's Next. I considered getting This Type of Thinking and probably will if I find it cheap. I expect the newest release to have great material as well. I just get bothered when it's overplayed on the radio.
Three Days Grace is another group with overplayed singles. I guess that sort of thing often keeps me from buying albums, but I do think they're a good band. That's how I feel about/react to most of the mainstream bands you mentioned. Even though they may have lots of other good songs, I just get sickened by the overplayed singles and end up ignoring the album.
I think I heard HourCast on satellite radio recently but don't remember what they sounded like. Tupelo Honey doesn't ring a bell.

Thanks. I'm interested in learning of more bands and different types of music so I decided to make a thread here on BYTB.
All three of those are solid cd's. Gotta love Tool tho
Sounds good.
yeah I do agree a bit with 30 Seconds to Mars' album. I haven't heard their original one, but this one did seem a bit mainstream. I do enjoy "The Kill", although Leto needs to work on his scream lol. Their music vid was ok.. but not what I expected.
Yeah same here. I enjoyed TTOT a bit more than WWN, but that changes every now and then. I hate when radio stations over play songs (Like "Hate Me" by Blue October). I have yet to hear Well Enough Alone on a station up here tho. Oh btw, apparently Chevelle has 2 other bonus tracks available, I will post links to where you can DL them (through sendspace, same place I got them).
I do agree with the overplaying of three days grace, it is overkill. They're a very good group, but radio stations are going to kill my love for them by playing their songs OVER AND OVER. You get sick of them after a while.
HourCast is a bit darker, heavier.
Here's a link to their myspace, where you can check out some of their songs.

Seasick Steve; I'd never heard of this guy til New Years Eve, when he turned on the annual Jools Holland music show. I was blown away. I've just got his CD and it's good. Not all of it is right up there, but 4 or 5 songs are truly excellent (and very much in the style of the YouTube link of the performance I was just talking about). I'm going to see him in Camden (North London) in about a week and I truly can't wait.
Rancid; This isn't a CD review, but I wanted to share it with anyone who might be interested. My favourite group. Someone just emailed this to me. Apparently it was recorded on a mobile phone, if that's so it's a good one! This was November 06 at Brixton Academy (South London). This was my gig of last year. I've seen Rancid about 6 times now (sadly they really don't come here very often!), and even by their standards, they were good that night. They did a couple of acoustic tracks (these). I doubt you'd have been able to do an amateur recording of the non acoustic stuff (at least one worth hearing - it would just be too loud).
A 5 song EP by the Edmonton rockers, this is something that every rock fan should pick up.
Because of You: A fast paced song. Even packs a little bit of screaming in it thanks to Dan (rhythm guitar). 5/5
Make Me Believe: A slow song. This is their single and rightfully so.
4/5
Screaming: This song has been available for a while. I believe it won an award in a national lyrics competition (refer to their myspace...). It's not a heavy song, but it's not entirely light.
4/5
Envy: A short, fast paced song. A bit repetitive, but I still love it.
4.5/5
Epic: another slower song. Lyrically, this is the strongest on the album imo. Great song. 5/5
