The door closes and Kent Nelson believes that he has finally rid himself of the Helmet of Fate which has caused him so much trouble as of late. As he lays his head down to rest, a portal opens up and wraps Nelson in a cocoon of darkness and takes him through the portal to the fiery red glow on the other side.

Maddy cannot resist the urge and places the Helmet of Fate on her own head. Thinking that her research has earned her the right to carry the mantle of Dr. Fate, Maddy travels to a heavenly plane of existence where she seems to be greeted by glowing golden gods. Her trip takes a nightmarish turn for the worse however when the gods begin to spit upon her and tell her how undeserving she is. A cherub's head explodes into a bloody pulp in front of her and the headless angel takes Maddy to meet Ymp the Imp.

Ymp, by orders of Negal, takes Maddy through a tour of a hellish realm of existence where all of the pain and suffering in the world can be seen clear as day. Images of pain, hate and war fill Maddy's eyes before she is finally taken before Negal. Negal has also gathered Kent Nelson's unconscious body and announces his plans to rid the universe of anyone who would wear the mantle of Dr. Fate on any and all planes of existence.

PLOT:
Bruce Gordon (along with Crispus and his ex-wife Mona) travel to the locations of each of Eclipso's gang members. One by one he uses his modified crystal to remove the power of Eclipso from their beings and the evil stain from their hearts. After cleansing the hearts of Plastic Man, Creeper and Dove, the band of reformed Eclipso devotees travel to confront the remaining gang member - their leader, Rosario Corrotto.

When they get there, Corrotto confesses that he has been serving his master Eclipso of his own free will and Bruce's crystal will have no affect on him. Corrotto's magi then activates a containment field around the compound which keeps Crispus from using his Spectre abilities and causes him to start fading from existence! Using Mona as collateral, Corrotto takes Eclipso's current host Bruce Gordon and brings him face to face with the re-built heart of darkness. The others are rounded up by Corrotto's goons and taken inside and held hostage.

Fearing for his wife's life, Bruce transforms into Eclipso. Upon reciting an incantation and touching the doomed stone, Eclipso becomes one with the Heart of Darkness and transforms into a near god-like form with  power not felt since before being captured by Darkseid. Eclipso crushes the tiny diamond which has caused the Gordon family so much pain over the years, saying that since Bruce has changed it for his own purpose, he has no use for it. Eclipso tells Corrotto to keep Mona safe until he comes for her.

Meanwhile, by transforming back into Jack Ryder, the Creeper is able to free himself from his bondage. After freeing Hawk, Dove and Plastic Man, the group takes out Corrotto's Magi and brings Crispus safely outside the compound so that he can regain his powers. Crispus immediately transforms into the Spectre and takes off to confront Eclipso (who is currently attempting to carve his name into the face of the moon).

Upon arriving at the moon, Spectre determines that the only way to stop the suped-up Eclipso is by ripping the abomination to shreds. The two engage in a heated battle but are stopped short when Spectre hears a familiar voice. William Hanson has joined forces with Eclipso and has brought his ghost army of those carrying grudges against Spectre to do battle on the face of the moon.
