Crushed by the loss of Inza, Dr. Kent Nelson searches for a way to redeem himself by reading Inza's "More Pain Comics." In it he finds that he identifies heavily with the main character of Killhead, a violent and ugly creature just trying to justify his existence. Dr. Nelson tries to use his psychiatric training to interpret the meaning behind Inza's comic but wonders if perhaps he's only forcing his own interpretation on the work.

Seeking answers, Nelson finds his way back to the book store where Maddy immediately comments on the purple color of his aura and asks who it was that left Kent so abruptly. Maddy then tells Dr. Nelson that she remembered why exactly the helmet of Fate looked so familiar to her. Once inside the store she pulls out a book titled, "The Occult History of World War II" which contains a historical account of the original Dr. Fate!

Bruce Gordon tries to hurl himself into the surface of the sun but is unable to overcome the gravity. He crash lands on the surface of Mercury where he meets up with Crispus Allen and William Hanson (whom Gordon can see) but they refuse to help Gordon kill himself. After realizing that he is unable to simply toss the cursed stone into a black hole, Gordon gets a wild idea - he takes off for Mertvayagrad, Russia.

Mertvayagrad, a city taken off the map after a particle acceleration experiment went horribly wrong is also still home to the largest Synchronotron ever created. It is here that Gordon plans on finishing the work he begun at Vicara Labs to prove that he was right all along. Once entering the research facility the trio find a group of horribly mutated former citizens waiting for them. Bruce tries to control the powers of Eclipso but is unable to. The brief battle brings Eclipso to life who knocks Crispus unconscious and proceeds to kill every last mutant there. When Bruce comes to he finds his ex-wife, Mona, chained up and left for him to find by Eclipso.

In Washington DC, the Eclipso infected heroes (Plastic Man, Creeper and Dove) are on infiltrating a storage facility on a mission from Corrotto. Their target is something that Corrotto plans on using to make Eclipso the most powerful being on Earth and they've just found it.
