PLOT:
The gang truce was apparently short lived. A couple of Black Gaters just mugged a nun by the name of Sister Elizabeth Nichols. Nichols runs the Marlowe Mission which provides hospice care to retired workers of the church. And it just so happens that tonight a man by the name of William Green was murdered at the Marlowe Mission in a
grisly fashion. Salt was poured into the bullet hole and his lips were ripped off his face.
Armed with his Swords of Sin and Salvation, Azrael begins his quest for justice by tracking down the gang members responsible for rolling Nichols. Using his dual blades he delivers them their due punishment, a taste of Hell and a glimpse of Heaven to remind them that their actions have trapped them forever between the two. But Azrael knows that if he's to find true justice, he'll have to talk to the Sister Elizabeth herself. So he heads down to the 12th Precinct where the Mission's staff are being held for questioning.
There he learns that the victim's name wasn't really William Green but actually Father William Tucker, a priest whom Father Day identifies as being involved in a church cover-up involving the victimization of young altar boys. Leaving the precinct, Michael runs into Batman who tells him that the killer's MO matches that of twelve other murders across Europe and South America in the past two years. Azrael promises the Dark Knight that this, his first killing in North America, will be his last. But will that be because Azrael stops him or has the killer simply reached the end of his hit-list?
Armed with the knowledge given to him by Father Day, Michael seeks out the advice of the only other person he knows who can help him find his way through this moral quagmire. Showing up at late-brother's wife Jenny's doorstep isn't exactly at the top of his list of things he wants to do. It's certainly an awkward visit given that the last time the two saw each other they had made love. But Michael needs someone to hear him out. And Jenny of course listens. But as he's making his way out the door she asks him about a strange sight her son MJ saw a few weeks ago. A man dressed as Batman whom MJ seemed convinced was his uncle. Mike dodges the question and makes his way out the door towards the Gotham Airport.
There he finds his killer. A hit-man representing the twelve young boys victimized by one Father Walter Jankowski. He's been hired out to kill Jankowski and the twelve other priests who were complicit in his actions. Puncture the eyes of those who saw and did nothing. Remove the lips of those who were silent. Sever the fingers of the ones who signed the transfer paperwork to allow for the church's cover-up. None of the symbolism is lost on Michael. But as the hitman goes to make his connection towards Dublin to finish off his list, Michael decides that he's in no position to stop him. After all, is he not just doing God's justice? The same thing he's purported to do?
And so, Michael watches as the murderer leaves, knowing that Walter Jankowski is a dead man. But Michael doesn't know what his own future entails.
He doesn't realize that in just six months, six days and six hours from then the police will be responding to a distress call at the Church of the Holy Redeemer. It will have been just three short weeks since Harvey Bullock was last there, but the church no doubt looks completely different from his last visit. Nearly the entire front wall of the church is missing. It looks as though someone literally tore the roof off the place. Shell-casings litter the floor, hiding between the pews. And a trail of blood leads directly up to the altar.
There Michael Lane, stripped of his Azrael armor will have crucified himself upon the altar's cross. And in just three short hours after that, Bullock will know everything there is to know about Azrael and the Order of Purity. Michael's own friend on the force Pete Farelli will be the one to tell them everything. But just how deep did he get into the world of Azrael? And just how did the Suit of Sorrows finally drive Michael Lane over the edge bringing him to suicide?
