Superman
DC SuperHeroes: Mattel, 2006 Asst J2003, SKU# J2010
Superman is back and he?s never looked better. While first wave of DC SuperHeroes figures were most repainted and slightly retooled versions of Mattel?s Comic Series of Batman figures that were shipped overseas, this new ?Superman Wave? features all new figures of Superman, Supergirl, Bizarro and Doomsday.
This is how an Action Figure should look. The sculpting is almost spotless and the articulation is more than enough without sacrificing the look He?s got almost limitless poseability and outstanding play value. Not to mention a dead on iconic look of The Man Of Steel.
SPECS:
The figure stands 6 1/2 inches tall and has 24 points of articulation (head, shoulders, biceps, elbows, wrists, hips, thigh, knees, and ankles) with a vinyl cape. It includes a Superman: Man Of Tomorrow 9 Comic Book
PROS:
This is one of the best Superman figures ever released at least in the 7? scale. It makes Mattel?s previous comic style Superman figure (available in 2 packs with Batman) look sick. The chest joint is flawless and much better than the one Mattel used on Batman in the first wave of figures, not to mention better than most of Toy Biz?s Marvel figures.
CONS:
I only have a couple of small gripes. First is the ball jointed hips. They are the same style Mattel used in the Batman Begins Power Tek figures and the Deluxe Collector figure. While they look good on an all black figure, Superman?s blue legs and red shorts make the paint job on the inner part look a little odd in some poses. Second is the ball jointed head is good, but does not go back far enough to make a good in flight pose. An additional neck joint (like The Batman?s Man-Bat) to make him look straight up (or out when flying) would have been great.
OVERALL:
The return of the comic style Superman figures was long overdue. The pegs will be clogged with Superman Returns figures, so it may be hard to find these DC SuperHeroes figures. Wal-Mart got them first, but Target and TRU should be next to get them.
This is a really good action figure and even if you only marginally like Superman, you should like this figure. Nice to play with, nice to look at and a must have for any action figure collector.

Very nice, FlaBat. This is definitely the best Superman figure in my collection. I do think the blue & red are a little off though. The red's a little dark and the blue is almost like a dark lavendar. My brother's figure also has a bit of a loose neck, like it could come apart. He was actually thinking of using the UPC and trying getting a new one. It's funny to compare this new one with the old 2-pack version. The old one looks like he's from the Super Powers Collection.
Nice review. None of the previous Superman figures impressed me enough to pick up, but I really liked this one. I was afraid the extra articulation would hurt the look, but the designers did a great job with adding useful articulation without sacrificing anything. I also snagged Bizarro and Doomsday, but Supergirl looked a bit weird so I left her on the peg.
You're right, the older one really does look like a Super Powers figure.
I am largely passing on this wave. I have the DC Direct Superman and Doomsday that are at least as good as these. This one is still pretty cool, but I didn't figure that I needed another set of redundant figures.
These are still really good for mass market figures.
Just to add a quick note: The International versions will come with a 2 sided poster. I got the International chase version Bane with Teddy Bear from DC Superheroes Wave 1, and it came with a 2 sided poster(1 side was based on the front cover of the comic book that came with Killer Croc, and the other was based on the front cover of the comic that came with the Batman figure). The DC Superheroes toys with posters instead of comics are now appearing in Canadain Toys R Us stores(The comics versions came out a month ago), and so far, I know for sure that 1 side of the poster is based on the front cover of the comic book that comes with Bizarro. Don't know what the other side is, but it is probably the 1 that comes with the Superman figure(At least that's my guess).
