For those that don't know, on November 17th, Michael Richards caused quite a stir with his racial remarks toward some audience hecklers at the stand-up show he was performing. He was on David Letterman tonight via satellite and made a lengthy apology. It's a pretty big ordeal and you could tell he was in shock of what he did.
This isn't necessarily a thread for discussion, as it's highly controversial and I think we'd all have similar opinions anyway. I just thought I'd post this to inform an any fans of Michael Richards. Let it be known that it does include some foul language.

Michael Richards is a fine sketch comedian (Seinfeld, Fridays), but he is not a stand up comedian, never has been and now, never will be again. Any stand up comedian knows how to handle hecklers, but he clearly did not. What he said was regrettable, but who here has not ?lost it? at one time or another and spouted remarks that were wrong on all levels? We?ve all done it, but we?re not celebrities and we are not in the public eye they way they are. He should have known better, but he slipped up like humans do from time to time.

completely uncalled for. This proves that he should never ever do stand up comedy again. Stand up comedians should know how to deal with hecklers in a fashion that is not offensive. I've seen shows in which comedians have made a joke out of the situation and even made the heckler laugh. Thats a professional. This was ridiculous

I think you said it perfectly. It seems like a lot of people who have never tried it assume that stand-up is easy, while everyone in the business will tell you that it's one of the harder stage acts to do sucessfully. This just proves why. |

FlaBat, my brother said the exact same thing. Being a celebrity, the actions are magnified and will most likely taunt Richards for the rest of his life, even in highly unjustified ways like Paul Rubens being accused of crap like child molestation. But I think he might be making a comeback actually...
Richards' seemed to be using his anger as a tool for the show at first. People can easily be heard laughing and applauding at the first few lynch-related comments, but when he continuosly repeated "He's a nigger!" it really went downhill. And the "It shocks you to see what's buried beneath" really gave the impression that he's been supressing personal racism, which, evidently, isn't actually the case.
What's really annoying is people like this Hispanic comedian (not Mencia... I can't remember his name) being interviewed and saying "If you say the N word, and you're not of color, you have some explaining to do." That just has double standard written all over it and is a slap in the face of equality. And that's not even the issue at hand anyway. He's really tried to apologize, and you could tell he was absolutely devastated over the whole thing during his piece on Letterman. It's too bad so many people can't be more sensible and forgiving. The hecklers are even planning on sueing him now, as if his punishment hasn't been enough. His actions were definitely wrong and inexcusable, but if anything, I almost think he could use a little support now.

Two sets of stars trying to be funny in the early 70's...
Donny and Marry...
Sonny and Cher...
Then comes O J for the Police Squad movies...
If Richards wants to be funny he should stick with the Krammer
charactor and work it into his act...
He was funny in the early 80's on Friday's TV show...
As for being sued...It will never happen...
The audiance at the club is there to laugh and should not take offense
to anything heard in a comedy club...
If this is the case then all comedy clubs will have high insurance rates for
freedom of speech???
What is this country coming to???
