The Batman Unmasked
The Batman, Series 1: FlaBat, 2005. SKU# F1000

Gotcha! I bet at first glance you thought this was another one of my reviews of the latest Mattel Batman, right? Or maybe it?s the first look at the 2005 Comic Con figure that the scalpers will sell for $200 on eBay. Well put down your car keys you won?t find this figure in the stores. This is my first attempt at a custom figure.

SPECS:

This is a Bruce-To-Batman head on a Triple Shot Batman body. The head swap is simple enough except that the peg on the Triple Shot Batman body is just a little bigger than the one on the Bruce-To-Batman body. So I had to rout out the hole in Bruce?s head to make it fit. I also had to trim the height of the head peg on the Triple Shot Batman body to fit the Bruce head on.

PROS:

I could have stopped at the head swap, but I wanted the cowl to hang from the back. I used the cowl that came with Bruce-To-Batman. This is a natural custom and easy enough to do, but it did require some work on the cowl from to shave down the round ears and ribs on the sides and back. A Rotary Tool made the task easy, but still it looks a little rough. I even thought of melting the cowl a bit to give it a slightly folded, collapsed look and hide the sanding marks a bit better.

CONS:

Well, this being my first I made a couple mistakes. I used Testors Flat Black spray paint and it never seemed to dry right, in fact it never did dry. I need to find a better paint for the soft plastic cowl or wait for the upcoming Bruce To Batman variant that has a black cowl already.

I also only had Testers Cement for plastic models and it only kept the cowl in place overnight. It just won?t stick to either the body or the cowl. I would have used super glue, but did not have any handy. I?ve left the cowl off for now, but will add one later. Maybe I?ll even heat up the next cowl I use so it has a crumpled look to it hanging on the back of his neck.

Lastly, I should have used ?Sculpty? or some kind of putty to make the transition from the neck to the cowl smoother. I then would need to sand it, but it would take away the rough edge that the cowl has now.

OVERALL:

This is a decent figure for a first attempt and I?ve seen pictures of an upcoming Bruce-To-Batman repaint that looks to have a better cowl to use. I may update this figure after I see this new version or maybe just tweak this figure a bit more.

All of you figure customizers looking at this, I could use a few tips on how to tweak this figure and any future attempts a bit better. Especially concerning which glue and paints to use.

That's a nice little custom job. I gotta get this back in the Fan Fun's Custom Figures section. Same goes for Shadowbat 69's Mego villians. By the way, neat signature, Shadowbat.

I noticed watching The Batman Vs. Dracula that the eyes of the cowl stay white when it's off his face. Maybe some little white pieces could be added to the eyeholes of the helmet/cowl.

Well here?s another look at an update of the first Custom Figure I did. Being the first one and all, I made some mistakes.

The first time I took the blue cowl of the Bruce Wayne Batman figure and ground down the round ears and painted black. Unfortunately it was the wrong paint and it never dried. It stayed tacky to the touch. I also used the wrong glue and it fell off the next day.

So along comes a new version of the Bruce Wayne Batman and it has a normal black cowl. So I trimmed off the excess and used Super Glue to put it on the figure.

The results are much better. This is still a great figure idea for Mattel, so maybe they?ll make one some day.

The eyes were already there. This is a quick and easy custom it's a wonder Mattel never released one like it.

Yeah, I suppose they were. Guess I was comparing too closely to the original custom you did.

It is wierd; in all these years I don't think there's been a figure like this aimed at kids. The only ones I can think of are the Mattel Comic Con versions and new DC Direct Unmasked line.

It's a head swap. Having a separate mask could be tricky.

It would be nice, yeah, but very hard to accomplish. I remember fantasizing about having a prefectly seemless quick-change figure when I was a youngen, but it'd be so hard to really make such a figure unless they went all-out and made, say, a 12" doll with fully-removeable cloth clothing.
