Chapter Seven
C.J. looked all over the apartment for the files that he and Ava had taken from Penguin's office. He couldn't find them anywhere. Ava walked into the apartment from a long day of sitting behind a desk. She was ready to get her hero suite on and take her anger out on some street thug who deserved a good whooping.
"Ava, have you seen those files anywhere? I can't seem to find them", C.J. replied.
"You mean the files I took to Two-Face?" Ava asked.
C.J. just looked at her, "Whaa...What do you mean?"
"I took the files to Two-Face and told him what Penguin was planning to do", Ava explained, "I told you before, I am not going easy on Erin or Penguin".
"Ava, Erin's life is in danger!" C.J. exclaimed, "She's still a human being! I mean...I was driving Cobblepot's limo the other night. They're in love with each other. Yes, it's sick and disturbing but still...giving those files to Two-Face?!"
"Was I supposed to take them to Gordon? C.J. nobody knows who we are. It would look weird if we had the files. I gave them to Two-Face to help take down Penguin. Maybe Erin's bird-groom-to-be will save her", Ava said with a hint of bitterness.
C.J. sighed. He ran his fingers over his temple. There was just no talking to someone when they've been betrayed or think they have.

Edward looked a little uneasy as they walked into the Iceberg Lounge. Everyone just kept going on with their own business as usual. Oswald stood up from his seat just as Erin, Crane and Edward walked in. Crane went to the bar, nodding courtly to Oswald. Erin went to Oswald, smiling. She leaned over, kissing his cheek. Edward went to walk past them, following Crane. Waving his hand, Oswald's security detail took hold of Edward's forearms. Holding him in place.
"Leave him alone!" Erin spoke up, turning to help Edward.
Before she could take two steps, Oswald latched hold of her arm, keep her at his side. Edward and Oswald stared daggers at each other.
"If you think you can just walk in here and hoped I forgot all about how you tried to kill me", Oswald remarked, "You have another thing coming".
"I'd hoped you'd be more forgiving since I wasn't the one trying to kill you. Black Mask threatened Erin's life and then threatened mine. I was doing it to protect her! So, I should think you could be more grateful", Edward stated.
"I want him out of my sight now", Oswald whispered darkly.
"You should also know", Edward continued as the security detail tried to drag him towards the doors, "Black Mask tried to rehire me to bring Erin to him but I said 'no'. He tried to shoot me but Crane showed up and stopped him. Croc and Firefly were trying to kill Erin. If I hadn't found her first, she'd have been hurt. I think they're working for either Black Mask or Two-Face".
Oswald looked at Erin, his expression softening a little. Erin just nodded her head. He released the hold on her arm. Erin just rested her hands on his shoulder.
"It's true. If it wasn't for Edward...I'd be singing for the birds", Erin commented.
After a second of personal debate, Oswald called off the security detail. Edward straightened himself a little, walking towards them but keeping out of reach of the shorter man.
"You can start by helping Crane find out who Croc and Fiefly are working for", Oswald stated, before turning to go sit down again.
Edward raised an eyebrow in Erin's direction.
"That's Ozzy's language for, thank you", Erin told him smiling.
Edward nodded. He just watched her with a small sad expression as she followed Oswald to one of the nearby tables.

"The whole city has become a board game", Bruce replied to Tim and Dick, who were standing behind him.
"We just got to figure out who's play for who", Dick pointed out.
They were staring at the middle screen panel. On the screen was a graph of Gotham outlined.
"Penguin's doing very well. He's only got Crane, Erin and Riddler", Tim exclaimed.
"You were supposed to be at school", Bruce told him.
"And let Erin get cut up into little pieces? No way. Besides, I got to miss Math class", Tim remarked.
Dick sighed, "Penguin's nothing. He's got Erin. We should really focus on taking down either Black Mask or Two-Face".
"Are these guys really threatened by her?" Tim asked.
"They're only threatened because she's helping Penguin", Dick commented.
"Erin's got nothing to threaten them with", Tim exclaimed, "These guys kill, black mail, threaten, murder, all sorts of people. One person can't possibly make them feel threatened".
"Tim, just think about would happen if a mob member held a gun to Penguin's head", Bruce spoke up.
"I see what you mean. Well, I hope that guy has health insurance then", Tim stated.
"Exactly", Dick said, nodding his head.

Chapter Eight
It was ten minutes after eleven at night.
Erin sat behind Oswald's desk. The only source of light came from the computer's screen. She scrolled through several files she'd copied and pasted, reading every little blurb that came up. The noise from the Lounge could be heard from the floors below but she hadn't expected half as much peace and quiet either. She held the phone in her left hand, her other hand on the computer's mouse. One long curved leg crossed the other.
"He's been working for Rupert Thorn no surprise there. Gun for hire apparently", Erin said, "Started working for Black Mask".
"A small disinterest probably. Thorn hires these guys out of not wanting to do the dirty work himself. Why shoot some drug dealer who is nothing but gum on your shoe. Forget about that. Two-Face does his own business. For all you know, he's got this Black Mask workin' for him", Sal Maroni replied, on the other line, "You got anything else?"
"A hit list of guys you could go after and the head of the Falcon Crime Family would rain money on you", Erin told him.
"You want me to shoot anyone for you?" Sal asked.
Erin laughed, "I've already got three men downstairs who want to rip each other apart. I think I'm all set".
Batman silently watched from the open window, perching himself on the windowsill. Erin noticed his shadow from the computer screen.
"I'll have to call you back", Erin muttered, "I've got unwanted company".
She hung up the phone and turned in her seat to face Batman. The caped crusader stepped down from the windowsill, his usual scowl plastered on his face.
"I can just trace that phone call unless your willing to give me information", Batman replied, taking out a device from his utility belt.
"Sal Maroni if you must know", Erin said, "I don't see why you care".
"You were almost killed today by Killer Croc and Firefly", Batman exclaimed, "What does anyone have to say around here to make you stop before you are killed?"
"Maybe", Erin stood up from the computer chair, "If my boyfriend wasn't in danger of being shot by some insane gun wielding criminal, I could sleep easier at night. I've yet to resort to go to the Joker but of course nobody knows where he is, so I'm kind of stuck with options".
"Don't be foolish. Don't get yourself killed because Penguin can't handle this situation. You've done all you've needed to do. Let me and Commissioner Gordon handle this", Batman said, his voice deathly calm.
In rare moment, Erin's face became a ball of indignant anger, tears threatening to shatter through her eyes,
"Apparently you don't understand how it feels to loose someone you care about! I'm trying to protect him and nobody seems to get that! I LOVE HIM!" Erin remarked.
Batman took her by the shoulders, he looked at her for a moment. She was biting down on her lower lip, holding back on crying. She looked tired and quite at the end of her rope trying to figure out how to protect her beloved Penguin. Oswald's voice spoke through the small speaker on the phone.
"Erin, do you want me to bring you up anything?" Oswald asked.
Batman wanted to throw up as he let go of Erin. Erin picked up the phone again and held it to her ear, her eyes casting down.
"That'd be great. And could you...come up? I'm done with my work", She stated.
Batman shook his head as he disappeared through the open window. He understood almost everything in Gotham. But Erin's devotion to Penguin was probably one thing he didn't get. When Erin got off the phone, she went to the window and shut it, locking it. She stood there looking at her reflection, which was a contrast of light blue and dark blue because of the computer's light.
"Don't listen to that flying rodent. Your doing this for Ozzy. Because you love him and you know he'd be doing the same for you. He did save you and he does love you".
I know.

Chapter Nine
It was late afternoon.
Ava stood in casual clothes as she browsed the convenient store's shelves for something to munch on. So far in her little basket, she had small bags of chips, soda and a couple of candy bars. The door at the front of the store dinged. But of course there were about a few other people roaming about the store, stopping to buy whatever, pay for cigarettes or lottery tickets. Ava didn't notice a casually dressed Jonathan Crane with Erin on his arm, walk into the convenient store only a moment later. Crane looked beyond furious but he hid it quite well.
"Don't give me that look. Your little scene with Edward yesterday nearly got you killed. And I've already told him my opinion and it's only safe if you remain in my care", Crane remarked quietly.
"Jonathan, I don't think-", Erin went to argue.
"Don't argue. You may win your little battles with Penguin. But I let you tread too far from my side", Crane snapped, eying her, "Penguin is just lucky I don't drown him in a vat of my toxins".
"You wouldn't. You promised", Erin said, with a harsh in take of breath.
Crane pulled his arm away and reached out to lightly stroke her curls with his thin fingers. A smirk twisting on his lips. He over shadowed her, making her back into one of the shelves. He lent forward a little, his lips close to her ear.
"You may belong to Penguin but if the bird screws up, if he lets you get hurt, if this goes too far, I'll remind him who you really belong to", Crane whispered, a deathly, venomous tone in his voice.
When Ava was about to round the corner, Crane pulled away from Erin and strode casually down the aisle and off to the left. Leaving Erin to sit with her thoughts. Ava spotted Erin and a glare screwed up on her face. The red head gathered her bearings and looked around on the items on the shelves around her. Ava walked up to her, pretending to be interested in a box of crackers.
"You look familiar", Ava all too casually commented.
"I do?" Erin asked, eying her.
Ava's temper snapped.
"Of course you do. Well, I wish I looked familiar but of course you wouldn't recognize your own ex-best friend", Ava commented.
Erin quirked an eyebrow at her. She hadn't had many friends as far as she could remember.
"Ava. The girl you grew up with", Ava stated, finger nails biting into the palm of her hand as she held her grocery basket.
Erin smiled a little, "Really? Wow. Um...how are you?"
"That's all you have to say after this whole time? How are you? That's it? Your not going to apologize for breaking our promise and for leaving me feeling like the loneliest person on the face of the planet when you decided to become infatuated with that pompous bird-loving freak!" Ava replied.
Apparently this little outburst had caught Crane's attention and he swooped into the fray, appearing once more at Erin's side, he narrowed his dark brown eyes at Ava, a look of displeasure on his thin face. Erin just looked at Ava, rather confused as to what she was talking about.
"Everything alright?" Crane asked smoothly, looking at Erin.
"Who's this?" Ava asked, looking at Crane with even more disgust.
"Dr. Jonathan Crane. He was my psychology professor during my first year at Gotham University. He's a psychologist now up at the asylum", Erin explained.
"What did you do? Trade up?" Ava asked, sarcasm in her tone. She knew Erin was in love with Penguin. There was no doubt. So what was the red head doing with a psychology doctor?
"Ms. Knightly and I are rather close friends. I'm escorting her about the city while Mr. Cobblepot attends to some business", Crane stated dryly.
He fingered some fear toxin capsules in his jacket pocket. He didn't like the way Ava was looking at them. Or rather, how she was looking at Erin. He felt his scarecrow-persona crawl to the surface. Feeling an over-protective urge rise. Something in his dark brown eyes flashed behind his glasses.
"We should be going", Erin spoke up, tugging at Crane's sleeve, "Jonathan", she added softly.
Crane gave her a rare smile, nodding his head, "I have a few items to grab first", he told her, swiftly allowing his arm to wrap about her shoulders and turn her in the opposite direction.
Neither said anything to Ava as they walked away. Erin just let herself settle into Crane's side, feeling uneasy about bumping into the young woman who had appeared to be her age and the same height as her. Crane's fingers played with her hair thoughtfully as they strolled about the convenient store. Ava had hurriedly gone up to the front and paid for her items, leaving the store post haste.
"That was too close. You almost lost your cool", Ava muttered under her breath, taking out her cellphone and texting C.J.
Twenty minutes later, Erin and Crane departed from the small store and got into Crane's car. Erin took out her cell phone to see if she had any messages. Her inbox was empty. And there were no texts. The car pulled away from the curb and peeled down the street. Just as she was about to put away her phone, it rang.
"Hello?" Erin answered.
"I'm disappointed! How could you have a party and not invite me?" A cackling voice replied.
"How...how did you get this number?" Erin asked, eyes widening.
"If your good at something. Never do it for free", the Joker exclaimed on the other line.
Erin sighed. Time to real in the big fish.
"Your actually the man I was looking for", Erin told him.
"Am I now? Alright, beautiful. You. Me. The empty kitchen at the Gotham Hotel Suites in a half an hour. Come alone", Joker stated.
With that, he hung up. Crane quirked an eyebrow as Erin shut her phone. Crane didn't have to ask who it was, judging by the look on Erin's face. He just merely glanced at her as he stopped at a red light.
"Thinking of a business proposition?" Crane asked.
"The Joker won't be easy but it's worth a shot", Erin said, looking at him with a determined look.
Crane's fingers bit into the steering wheel. And knowing the Joker, Erin was to walk by herself into whatever building the Joker wanted to meet at. He wasn't going to allow that. Luckily, Joker didn't know the Scarecrow would be watching.
And would strike if the clown tried to harm his pet.

Chapter Ten
Here was the real test. How brave she really was. She pushed open the kitchen doors, letting them swing closed behind her. Her tux jacket billowing around her dress pants as she walked into the kitchen. The Joker was sitting up on one of the metal tables. Feet just swinging inches from the floor. He was tapping his fingers together in a bored manner, making popping noises with his lips.
The Joker had a white smeared face with black smeared eyes and his lips were between smeared and disfigured from razor blades that made a garish smile linger on his face always. His hair was dirty and between a dark green and a dark brown. His close were custom, no labels. The colors between dark green and dark purple, his shoes were dark brown. His eyes were between dark brown and black but very shiny as though if he were in daylight or darkness, there was no need for his eyes to adjust.
Erin walked over and tossed a vanilla-colored folder onto the metal table next to the Joker. He made eye contact with her before glancing over at the folder. He made a face as though saying "Oh" in an interested manner. He picked up the folder and just flipped through it. Not taking more than maybe a few minutes looking it over, humming and nodding his head now and then. After a moment or so, he set the file aside and turned back to Erin, tilting his head.
"Gotham's big time criminals fighting over the hot seat", Joker replied, "Which one do I get to make...an example of? Show them the finer things about being one of Gotham's greatest?"
"Dent's nothing to worry about. It's Black Mask we need to take down. Show him what kind of chaos he can't handle. He'll buckle and be weak", Erin exclaimed, gesturing with her hands.
"I like the way you think", Joker muttered, getting up from the table with a slight hop, "And I like a challenge", he added.
"Use anything you want. Explosions, gasoline, anything", Erin stated.
Joker chewed his bottom lip in thought and tilted his head from side to side. He placed his hands on his hips and started walking towards Erin and stopped, looking at her.
"I'm going to enjoy this", He stated, raising smeared, non-existent eyebrows.
Erin just briefly raised her own eyebrows as Joker grinned at her. He passed her the folder back and Erin followed him out of the kitchen. They came through the side-exit and out into the darkened street. Jonathan Crane was leaning against his car, arms folded. Joker made a mock-salute to Crane before disappearing.
"That was easy", Erin said.
"You were lucky you weren't killed", Crane fumed.
"You are lucky she wasn't either", another voice spoke up.
Edward Nygma was hurrying up the side walk, looking furious.
"What are you doing here, Nygma?" Crane growled.
"Protecting her from you and this madness. Don't think I don't know about this whole plan of hers because it's absolutely suicidal!" Edward exclaimed.
"I'm trying to keep Oswald alive", Erin replied, turning to him, "I'm doing everything in my power to make sure he doesn't get hurt. Joker's already in on my plan and he's willing to help".
"Joker?" Edward nearly laughed but scuffed, looking upset, "Erin...Erin, the Joker would just as easily do whatever he wants. Your attempts are just digging you a hole", he took her hands in his, "I've thought it over, please listen to me".
"Take your hands off of her, now", Crane muttered darkly.
Erin rolled her eyes, wrenching her hands from Edward's. Edward just stood there and watched her get into Crane's car, watching the card drive away. Erin slumped against the seat of the car. She stared out the window. The past kept
Phase one was complete. Now time for phase two.
