This is unconfirmed at this point, but there is a rumor that Mattel may have won the coveted license to reproduce the 1966 TV series Batmobile.

Danbury Mint came as close as producing flyers a few years back, so don't count on this as a done deal until the diecasts are on the shelf. Still, their history of producing movie Batmobiles puts Mattel as a strong contender.

If we go by their recent movie cars, they would most likely do it in 1/64 and 1/18. I'd like to think that they would do a 1/24 as well, but I fear that would be wishful thinking.

I'd love one in scale with the Mattel 6" figure range, or any of their shorter figures for that matter. I was considering making one from my old TRGB Ecto 1, but on my last visit to my mom's house it seems she recently threw it away

This is awesome news. A 1:18 scale 1966 Batman TV series Batmobile would be perfect. What I?d like to see is a 1:43 scale version along with 1:43 scale versions of the Batman films Batmobiles to go along with Corgi?s great line of Batman Comic Batmobiles.

Interesting point...1/43 was always a popular scale in Europe (much more than in the US), but I wonder if the recent Corgi waves may have made it a little more popular here as well.

Given how many fans are waiting for this, it would be nice to see Matttel step up and make some really good looking, accurately detailed replicas. One thing that gives me a lot of hope is seeing how they finally seem to be turning things around with the DCSH figure line: no wacky variants, decent distribution, and very well done figures. If this does work out, it would be great to see them apply the same philosophy to the Batmobile.

Just for the fun of it, I Photoshopped a mockup of what it could look like. I didn't take any great pains to make it look 100% authentic, but I think it gets the point across:

Man that would be cool. I would especially love to get 1 of those smaller versions that usually cost around $1.00(I think it's 1:64 scale. Sorry, I don't quite know my model scales well). 1 thing for sure is if I did get a 60's TV Batmobile at any scale, that once I open it, I know for sure that I'm going to be humming the 1960's show theme song(Come on, you can't say that none of you guys would). Who knows, with The Batman cartoon series bringing in Robin(Or rather, The Robin) for the upcoming season, maybe Mattel might make an actual(Or at the very least, inspired) 1960's TV series Batmobile for their The Batman toyline, so that people can have the Dynamic Duo in the classic car. And for those who are lucky to get a Batgirl figure, you will have the Triffic Trio. Either way, if Mattel manages to come out with these before 2006 ends, this will be a good way to end the 40th anniversity of the 1960's Batman TV series.

Yes indeed. I didn't realize the license was such a huge deal. We've got current renditions from Danbury Mint, Johnny Lighting, and Corgi.

And great manip, Spencer. wink

Yeah, this license has been kind of a "grail" of sorts for several years now. Trying to sort it out has been a mess, because George Barris/Barris Kustoms (owner of the design), 20th Century Fox (owner of the TV series), and Time-Warner (owner of everything "Batman" related) all have a share in it. The Danbury Mint, Corgi, and Johnny Lightning were able to make replicas based on a technicality: they produced replicas of the comic book car that was inspired by the TV car, so they only needed T-W's blessing.

Manufacturers often take a lot of liberties with scale, but the general shorthand is this:

~3 inches long = 1/64

~4 inches long = 1/43

~8 inches long = 1/25

~12 inches long = 1/18

I'm going to remain cautiously optimisitc until I see them on the pegs, but yeah - it's great to see an official acknowledgement. If they do make it in 1/64, I'm sure a 1/18 will be released as well.
