Well you need to clarify that question a bit more, hardest of all time or present day?

HARDEST TO FIND OF ALL TIME

Of all time there have been a fair number of them.

Knock Out Joker from The Dark Knight Collection (1991) is probably hardest figure to find from that series of figures. Both of the Joker figures were difficult to find but Sky Escape Joker is the more common one.

Battle Helmet Batman from Batman The Animated Series was a Mail Away Premium and pops up on eBay from time to time. It was a repainted BTAS: Infrared Batman.

Phantasm from the sub series Batman Mask Of The Phantasm (1994) was the hardest of that series to find. Most of the rest of that series of figures were found on the common BTAS Card Backs, but not Phantasm. Phantasm was used only once more in the The Adventures of BATMAN and Robin Rouges Gallery (1996) were she sported a new paint scheme.

Hong Kong Commemorative Edition Batman (1997), which was a repainted Legends of BATMAN Limited 100th Edition BATMAN, was part of a series of Kenner figures (including Star Wars) done for Hong Kong?s independence.

ToyFare Magazine gave away 25 sets of 4 Legends of the Dark Knight figures (1997). They were exclusive repaints of Bat Attack BATMAN, Glacier Shield BATMAN, Laughing Gas Joker and Panther Prowl Catwoman. I only have one of them, but mine does not have the Toy Fare logo on the packaging, so I?m not sure where it came from unless some of the sets were missing the package logo. These rarely turn up on eBay and among the hardest to find.

Not long before the Warner Bros. Stores closed up (1998) there was on last set of exclusive figures which were repaints Total Justice figures there were, Batman, Robin, Aquaman, Despero, Green Arrow and Hawkman. They pop up online every once in awhile, but I never saw Batman and Robin in the stores.

San Diego ComicCon International Exclusive BATMAN "Unmasked" Battle Damaged (2004) is the hardest variant of three Batman figures released for SDCC. The rumor is that only 50 of these were made. The next rarest is the is the ?Unmasked? version without the ?battle damage?, the rumor for this was there was a 1-in-10 chance of getting this figure at SDCC. The most common was the version with Batman ?Unmasking? and pulling the mast over his head. Most other SDCC exclusive figures are easy enough to get on eBay and the best thing to do is wait a year or so to pick one up after the hype has died down.

Just about all of the figures from Mattel?s Comic style Batman figures (2004, 2005) from Waves 4, 5 and 6 are hard to find, even on eBay. With sales lagging and Wave 1 variants still on the pegs, these three waves of figures all went overseas. Some of them are being reused (Bane, Scarecrow) for the current DC SuperHeroes line of figures.

Most of the The Batman Series 4 figures ended up repackaged in The Batman EXP package, but for some reason some did not and BATMAN To BATBOT, Fire Armor BATMAN and Power Prop BATMAN were all Deluxe figures that I never saw in the stores

HARDEST TO FIND PRESENT DAY

Of the current figures in stores now there are a few that I?ve only seen a couple of.

Batgirl from The Batman EXP and Blaster Batgirl are pretty rare, I?ve only seen a few.

Metal Head also from The Batman EXP is another of the villains that I?ve only seen one or two of on the pegs.

Clayface with the Ethan head from The Batman EXP, I?ve yet to see one at retail at all.

Most if The Batman EXP should have flushed off the pegs during Christmas, but there will be a few left hanging.

The Batman / Batgirl two pack from the DC SuperHeroes series was all but impossible to find at retail. They are on eBay, but I saw exactly 3 sets at Target in all the weeks I looked. It seems to me that the DC SuperHeroes line is not flooding the market line the previous Comic Style figures were. Most of the line of figures is tough to find unless you get to a store that just put them out, they just don?t last that long on the pegs.

Bane with his Teddy Bear ?Osito? is the rarest of the DC SuperHeroes line so far

As far as the new The Batman ShadowTek line, it?s hard to say which will be the hardest to find, but I bet Robin will not be easy to get, at least right now.

Now watch Caleson come along and tell me which ones I missed Smile

That figure was a Wizard Universe exclusive figure. I think they made more 100 of them, but it was easy to get when it was first offered.

Indeed I will, sir. Smile

Actually, I wouldn't classify Phantasm as one of the Hardest to Find Ever if you're referring to present day. I still don't own her, and she's toward the top of my wishlist, but if she was one of the hardest, collecting Batman figures would be a breeze. She's relatively tricky, but could probably be snagged on eBay for $12 or so MOC nowadays.

Here are some other rarities, although perhaps not the rarest ever...

Batman - Super Powers Collection (1984)
These basic figures will probably always remain popular with collectors and it's not hard to see why. Finding specific figures carded can be difficult, and Batman is no exception. Loose figures don't often include their capes either.

The Penguin - Batman: The Animated Series (1992)
Though I can't recall its current value, and it has since been released in a 4-pack, this figure has been valued in the past at nearly $100 MOC. I found one at a flea market the other year, without any accessories and roughed up. I may clean him up, make a new cloth coat, and just settle with that.

Clayface - Legends of the Dark Knight, Internet Exclusive (1997)
Another one I've been dying to get. I nearly got a loose one on eBay and regret losing the auction at only about $11. He's not horribly rare, but notable nonetheless.

Mr. Freeze "No Goggles" Variant - Batman (2003)
For a time, this was the most saute after figure of Mattel's Batman line, reaching around $90 if I remember correctly. He looks cool, but I prefer the classic look with red lensed goggles anyway.

Batman Series 5 & 6 (2004)
When Mattel started shipping Batman figures only to Europe and Australia, secondary market values shot up. Four figures from Series 6 were of particular value, including Bane, Scarecrow, Bat Signal Batman, and Attack Armor Batman, all of which had prices around $40 each. I haven't checked, but the first two have probably dropped dramatically with the reissues in 2006's DC SuperHeroes line.

The Penguin - Batman Returns, Series II (1993)
After lazily re-releasing the old Penguin mold in a black & red tuxedo, Kenner decided to reflect DeVito's gruesome likeness into their figure line, creating the single most saut after action figure in the history of mankind.

Good evening Caleson.

Most of the Super Powers figures are not hard to find, except Cyborg, he?s the most rare of that series. Batman was released on various Card Backs (full cards, short cards) which are hard to find if you collect based on Card Back (there are package collectors out there) but the figure itself is not hard to find. Finding a good one can be hard, but otherwise eBay always seems to have at least one up for auction.

I didn?t think The Penguin from BTAS was very rare either. Although it may very well be harder to find now, they were easy enough when it was new.

To me if I hunt at stores outside my normal area then the figure is rare. Take Poison Ivy from the BTAS series for example. It was really hard to find at retail. I was lazy one Saturday and took my time going to TRU that morning when I should have gone first thing. There I was on the action figure aisle looking for Ivy without luck. A little boy and his mother were already on the aisle when I got there, he had two Batman figures in his hand, I didn?t bother to check which ones. That was until I noticed the conversation between mother and son. The kid had a variant Batman and Poison Ivy in his hands. That?s right the figure I had been all over town looking for was there and a kid beat me to it. He wanted the Batman figure, but his mother talked him into getting Ivy because he already had a bunch of Batman figures. I waited and waited and I watched out of the corner of my eye hoping the kid would put Ivy down and leave. He didn?t, he took her home and I spent weeks hitting all the stores in three counties until I found another one.

Clayface from LODK was an Internet Exclusive, so were a couple others like Batman The Dark Knight and Shatter Blade Batman. None where hard to get at the time, you just had to know that Hasbro offered them online, they were not marketed very well as I recall.

Ice Cannon Mr. Freeze (No Goggles) from the Comic Style series of figures was indeed rare, except I seem to recall that some of them showed up as Wal-Mart exclusive figures. I know I got Killer Croc and the regular Mr. Freeze with the Comic Book that were Wal-Mart exclusives.

I did mention that the three waves of Comic Style figures was hard to get. While I did get Attack Armor Batman, Batsignal Batman still eludes me along with many others from those three series of figures.

I?ve never heard of The Penguin in Batman Returns Series II. I?ve never seen one either. I do recall that there were two (maybe three) more Batman figures that were named, but never released, but no Penguin. I seem to recall talk of doing a DeVito style Penguin, but that character was so grotesque along with the film that it did not fit well as a toy line. Do you have any pictures of this Penguin figure?

Yeah, in general, they aren't bad, but the various carded versions can be pricey and loose ones rarely have all their accessories. I suppose it's more a matter of price. And as I said, the figures I named are somewhat rare, although not necessarily the rarest ever.

I think you mentioned most of the rarest figures in your first post, but these were at least noteworthy. Of course we didn't even scratch the surface of old figures line Captain Action, Comic Action Heroes, or World's Greatest Super-Heroes!, but I doubt most young collectors would be willing to persue that territory anyway - at least not right off the bat.

FlaBat wrote:

I can't honestly remember how often I saw it in stores back in '92, but according to price guides, it was incredibly valued. I'm not sure why that is, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to mention this as interesting as it is. $100 for a mass retail figure from 1992 seems a bit strange.

I remember your Poison Ivy story from a past thread - a good lesson for collectors. Smile

Hee hee. That last one was purely a joke. Smile Though I'm not sure I've heard of those named-but-unproduced figures you mentioned; we'll have to make sure they're mentioned in BYTB's archives.

I had to dig into my old AFN?s, but I found the name of one of the Batman Returns Series II figures not released it was Toxic Guard Batman. I was sure there was at least one other, but I can?t find the other name. I never saw a picture of it.

It?s a good point that MEGO and Captain Action are among the rare figures now. Back then nobody thought to save them like collectibles, so while some survived they are among the more rare figures now.

Caleson I could not tell if you were joking or not about that Penguin figure. I do recall talk of making one more like the film with the flipper hands and DeVito?s look, but that may have been a fast food premium and not an action figure. They basicly reused a Super Powers Penguin for the one in the Batman Returns line rather than make a new one based on the film.

Welcome to the forum, New Batman! My situation is pretty strange over here in terms of new figures. I went to Target Tuesday and found the The Batman Poison Ivy and Ventriloquist 3-packs marked down to $9.98, same goes for the Superman Returns Menace to Metropolis set. Funny thing is, I never even saw them in the first place and here they are marked down. We never had Series 3 of DC SuperHeroes out here, so I dunno when I'll get Azrael... Most of the reviews that FlaBat does are for items that aren't even available in my area - not yet anyway.

I can say I 'v been luck in the past 25 years to find all
the hard to finders and rare stuff in all the action figure
lines...Batman and all the past Marvel, Spawn, Star Trek,
you name it I have collected it action figures...
You see out here in the State of Illinois we have a
store every other town or city...Plus the drug stores also
carry toys...Plus the area toy cons and the annual comic
book convention too...Plus E-Bay...big grin
The best thing you have to have in collecting is patience...
