PLOT:
After shrinking down, the Atom poses as a chess piece and infiltrates the ongoing game between Solomon the Monitor and Darkseid. Darkseid claims Solomon's king - Monarch - and chastises
the monitor for his foolishness in placing such high hopes in a corruptable mortal. Solomon was the one who ruptured Captain Atom's skin, warping his mind and turning him into the villainous Monarch.
Never one to give up, Solomon reminds the evil god that his planet, Apokolips is dying now that Brother Eye has fled. The Morticoccus Virus set to kill all the superheroes.
Darkseid claims that it is of no concern of his seeing as though neither the Superhumans nor the New Gods are going to be a part of his "Fifth World."
After hearing this, Atom retreats and rushes to tell the others. While debating what to do about the Morticoccus carrier, Karate Kid, he is pulled out of sub-atomic space by Firestorm who is waiting for him alongside the others.
It appears as though Donna's mysterious guests from last issue were none other than Jimmy Olsen and the Hairies from New Genesis.
Atom is shocked but relieved to find that his compatriots are carrying the partially disected Karate Kid with them still. A
debate begins over whether or not to kill Karate Kid (as suggested by Ray and Jason) or take him back to Earth and try to heal him (as they are pleaded to do by Una). Should they return the ailing Legionnaire to Earth however they also run the risk of exposing the world to the deadly virus he carries within him.
Regardless of their actions, Jimmy Olsen speaks up and claims that he has no plans whatsoever to leave Apokolips. He's going to confront Darkseid and demand answers for his
trials and tribulations as of late. Donna and Mary Marvel beg him to reconsider his madness as a third voice chimes in in agreement.
Solomon the Monitor stands before them now after having snuck away from his chess battle with Darkseid. Before the troops can rally around to try and attack the treacherous foe Solomon explains Jimmy's situation. Jimmy Olsen has been the vessel in which
Darkseid has been storing the energies of the defeated New Gods. As Superman's pal, this makes Jimmy the perfect bargaining chip to keep the other god at bay. At any moment, Darkseid could strip his vessel of those powers and leave Jimmy lifeless.
This new information only worsens the debate amongst the challengers and Solomon grows tired of it all. As his "final move" in the cosmic struggle against Darkseid, Solomon beams the heroes off of Apokolips and directly back to Earth. Now they must get ultra valuable Jimmy Olsen to protection
and decide the final fate of Karate Kid. Can the Legionnaire be saved? Or would the world be better if perhaps Val Amorr died?
