PLOT:
Lying on the floor of the church, Michael Lane's life comes flashing before his eyes. But strangely enough, he isn't dying. After being pierced by the Sword of Salvation his soul has suddenly become overwhelmed by the tragedies of his life. He feels the immense pressure of his every failure and wrongdoing - highlighting the need for salvation in his life. As he lie there muttering bible verses to himself, Talia's assassins begin to close in when without warning, Azrael jumps to his feet. Seizing the Sword of Sin next to him, the blade reignites immediately, triggered by a similar neurological reaction that brought on his crisis of conscience after being stabbed by the Sword of Salvation. He quickly clears the room of everyone but himself and Talia and challenges the Daughter of the Demon to a re-match.

Perhaps out of concern for the man or perhaps just in an attempt to save her own life, Talia al Ghul asks Michael Lane whether or not the Order of Purity ever told him exactly what happened to his predecessor. His interest piqued, Lane follows Talia as she tells him all about the origin of the suit and the tragic tale of Geoffrey De Cantonna. She goes on to explain that she wants the Suit of Sorrows back so that she can bestow it upon her son Damian, whom she feels would then be properly suited to take on the mantle of his father in this, Gotham's great time of need. Refusing to relinquish the armor, Lane goes on a fact seeking mission to find the Order of Purity members who had long since deserted the church.

He finds the sect at the hospital where they've taken their fallen colleague. There they agree to take Michael to the private quarters of a man by the name of Abraham Arlington down in the psychiatric ward. Arlington, former British military, was the Azrael before Lane. Recruited by another faction of the Order and prepared through "traditional" means, Arlington was driven mad after wearing the suit for only six weeks. Since being de-commissioned he's been kept in a private cell paid for by the Order. This fact obviously weighs heavy on Michael whose own mother is in another part of the wing. Catatonic she sits alone in a room that Michael can no longer afford.

Michael Lane leaves the hospital, weighing his options carefully. Does he take the suit and the position knowing that it will ultimately mean the death of him? Is killing (a sin in itself) the only way to care for his mothers and atone for his sins? Lane decides that his next visit will be to the suit's former home - the Bat-Cave beneath Wayne Manor. But before he can get there - Oracle has already been keeping a close eye on him, alerting Nightwing to the sudden appearance of another mysterious Azrael in Gotham. Unfortunately for Lane, the Oracle isn't the only sleuth on his case. Ordered by superiors to search the traffic cams nearby the church for evidence on the crimes that took place there, police officer Farelli is stunned to recognize the face of his former colleague Michael Lane on the video feed. The last time Farelli saw Lane was in the basement of the GCPD headquarters when Farelli was forced to break the officer's code of silence and tell Gordon about Dr. Simon Hurt's experiments.

Azrael arrives at the Bat-Cave and finds Nightwing waiting for him. Nightwing, thinking that Lane is guilty of Abraham Arlington's crimes, threatens to take him down. Either way, no one is likely to leave the cave without some much needed answers.
