Kathy was a circus trapeze artist who wanted more in life. Admiring the Batman, she used her inheritance to get the supplies she needed to become Batwoman and fight crime. Kathy even built a Batcave under her house.
For years Batwoman would help the Dynamic Duo by her self. It was only when her niece Betty discovered she was Batwoman that she decided to take on a partner. The duo would team up, much to the Dark Knights
dismay and help fight crime.
Batman tried to convince Kathy to give up the mantle, stating that it was no place for a lady. He never succeeded. In fact, Kathy proved herself to Batman and got his respect. While Bruce never revealed his identity to her, or explicitly told her of his private life, she said she knew of his change in his attitude to her and assumed as such. She largely retired from her costumed role soon after this. Kathy had married and had children. Though she continued to "help out" Batman on occasion, not realizing that Dick Grayson had replaced Bruce in the role.
She learned that Bruce was the original Batman when his costume identity was revealed to the general public with the death of his wife. It was not revealed if Bruce ever returned her feelings after the death of Selina but it was suggested that he did for she lamented about her feelings for him when the Earth-One Bruce came to Earth-Two suggesting that she and the Earth-Two Bruce had finally revealed their feelings to each other directly. Kathy realized that he was not the love of her life reborn, but was a completely new person. She finally realized that her chance at loving Batman was over and retired from the role and settled down to a civilian life.
If she had not died in the intervening years since that meeting with the Earth-One Batman, she was killed along with everyone else on his native Earth-Two in the Crisis on Infinite Earths and completely erased from history.
