As their undeniable connection grows deeper, Stefan's dangerous older brother, Damon, shows up to wreak havoc on the town of Mystic Falls - and claim Elena for himself. The Vampire Diaries is based on the bestselling book series from Alloy Entertainment.

The Vampire Diaries is a love triangle between two brothers, Stefan, Damon, and Elena, a high school student. Stefan and Damon have a long time grudge against each other due to an old lover named Katherine. Katharine, who had turned both Stefan and Damon into vampires, supposedly died which caused the rift between the two brothers.

Stefan is guilt ridden because of his past and will not feed on humans. Damon has embraced what he is and revels in it. Stefan goes back to Mystic Falls to see his “uncle” but while there he stumbles upon a car accident. He rescues Elena but her parents died. The two form a friendship then fall in love, however this is halted by her discovery of Stefan’s secret. Damon also returns to Mystic Falls and tried to steal Elena away from Stefan because of her resemblance to Katherine.

Elena as played by Nina Dobrev is a smart girl with a compassionate heart who definitely doesn't put up with any BS. In this vampire tale she doesn't just automatically tell Stephan it's all right when she finds out his secret. It's not cool that he's a vampire. People die around him and that's not ok. They fall in love despite his being a vampire rather than because of it.

Stefan Salvatore, Mystic Falls resident brooding vampire played by Paul Wesley has done a competent job in opening the character up. What he does to Damon in the basement was truly chilling.

And last but not least of the lead characters, Damon. Damon is just delightfully bad. Ian Somerhalder plays him with relish. In the wrong hands, his character could have easily become a cliché but the actor has turned him into someone you just can't help but feel for (equal parts sympathy and revulsion)as he struts his way around, doling out cruelty with a smile, all the while hiding a secret of his own.

The Blu-Ray version has the following features:
Into Mystic Falls: Bringing Vampire Lore and the High School Experience from Page to Screen
When Vampires Don’t Suck!: The Popularity of Vampires and the Fans Who Love Them
The Vampire Diaries: A New Breed of Vampires -- Casting the Series
The Vampire Diaries: Vampires 101 – The Rules of the Vampire
Creators/director pilot commentary
Unaired scenes
The Vampire Diaries: A Darker Truth Webisodes
Second Bite: gag reel

The Blu-Ray is in one word. Awesome. The High Def quality makes watching the series over and over again worthwhile.

The Vampire Diaries is a riveting and heart wrenching series. The Blu-Ray is a pretty awesome set. Both are a must for any true vampire fan.
