Extended News Tweet Batman swings into an exciting new era of animation in Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Soon to be hitting shelves, Batman: The Brave and the Bold Season 1: Part One 2-Disc DVD is teaming with a mighty honor roll of DC Comics Super Heroes. In this cool, cutting-edge and often funny series bringing back old-school comic-book styling and dry wit to crime fighting, Batman faces any peril - including other heroes stealing the show - in his relentless pursuit of justice. In the words of series break-out star Aquaman, “OUTRAGEOUS!”The show harkens back to the more creatively free-wheeling times of Bob Haney’s adventuresome team-ups between Batman and a host of characters from DC’s past present and future. Staying true to that tone, throughout the show's first 13 animated adventures the Dark Knight partners with Aquaman, Plastic Man, Blue Beetle, Green Arrow, Deadman, and the Atom to take on an array of wacky evildoers. The fan-favorite characters are tasked with dismantling the nefarious plots of the likes of mad scientists to intergalactic crooks, from power-mad dictators to out-of-control teenagers. At one point, Batman even travels to a parallel world, becoming the villainous Owlman! With all of these fantastic elements it’s hard to believe we’ve come so far from the noir street level days of Batman: The Animated Series. But don’t let that dismay you. Lets get this out of the way - Batman: The Brave, & The Bold has turned out to be a great show. It’s light with some dark mixed it. Put simply, it’s all versions of Batman mixed together to create its own hybrid version. In all honesty, I had my doubts through the first few episodes of the first season. However I, like many others like myself, came around and really like this series. If the release has any detracting qualities it would pertain to the DVDs themselves. It boggles the mind why Warner Brothers would release just the first thirteen episodes. Considering that all thirteen of these episodes have already been released in three separate additional DVD releases, the complete lack of special features becomes even more jarring. We as consumers are given absolutely no incentive to pick up this set, especially given that with their pre-established release patterns it’s almost a given that a COMPLETE season one set will someday hit shelves. Perhaps when WB gets around to doing that they’ll actually put some time into providing some added features to the release. Normally the problem with adopting this purchasing strategy is that you run the risk of encountering a Gargoyles cartoon type conundrum in which the studios release part one of a season as a way of testing market conditions. In these cases slow sales could stall or even outright prevent the distributors from considering providing the show in its entirety. However, as mentioned before, Warner Bros seems to have no compunction with releasing and milking this cash-cow as many times as it possibly can. Make no mistake, Batman: The Brave & the Bold Season One Part One is the epitome of a bare-bones release. However if you’ve resisted the urge to purchase these episodes before on one of the many other DVD releases or video platforms and simply cannot wait another moment to dive into the enjoyable series, then by all means feel free. Otherwise it may be in your best interest to wait it out as an additional supplementary DVD is sure to come down the pike sometime soon.
