I was looking through the Action figure pics again and I was wondering which figures from the 90-91 and the Returns Kenner collection were the rarest. I've even heard there was a devito figure but I've never seen it!

Some of the rarest figures MOC are

Crime attack Batman
Thunderwhip Batman
Robin
Bruce Wayne (hard to obtain a nice loose piece since he's from the Custom Coupe vehicle set)
the Penguin
Catwoman
Penguin commandoes

and all the releases for series 2 are hard to come by since they were released when the line was cancelled some of these are pretty common on ebay at this time but not so much the others

Pretty much all the vehicles and especially the Batcave Command Center (which can fetch up to 300 MISB on ebay) are rare and really hard to come buy examples include the Batmissile, the Batmobile and the Batskiboat

There was no devito figure made for the returns line although there was spectulation that there was a prototype made which was then used for the BTAS series at least that's what I heard. The only way to get a Devito Penguin is to custom make from a TAS figure sorry

You may remember our thread from December where we discussed rare figures...

http://batmanytb.com/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=19&thread_id=1939

As for the DeVito figure, you may be thinking of my post in that thread:

The Penguin - Batman Returns, Series II (1993)
After lazily re-releasing the old Penguin mold in a black & red tuxedo, Kenner decided to reflect DeVito's gruesome likeness into their figure line, creating the single most saut after action figure in the history of mankind.

That was just a joke, mainly to see what kind of reaction I'd get out of FlaBat and any other big figure enthusiasts. There was no other Batman Returns Penguin other than the Super Powers Collection repaint.

The rarest basic movie figure from 1990-1993 would probably be Knock-Out Joker (listed at $75, according to my September '98 issue of ToyFare). However, some of the Toys R Us exclusive, Deluxe figures seem pretty rare as well. I've been adding these values to the archives but haven't finished entirely. I'll just list the highest valued figures in order, according to my '98 ToyFare...

The Dark Knight Collection (1990-1991)
Knock-Out Joker - $75
Night Glider Batman (Deluxe) - $38
Blast Shield Batman (Deluxe) - $35
Claw Climber Batman (Deluxe) - $35
Thunderwhip Batman - $35

Batman Returns (1992-1993)
Rocket Blast Batman (Deluxe) - $65
Fire Bolt Batman (Deluxe) - $60
Penguin - $40
Claw Climber Batman (Deluxe - TRU Exclusive) - $35
Polar Blast Batman (Deluxe - TRU Exclusive) - $35

I only saw one Knock-Out Joker when I was very young. Mom refused to buy it for me. dull Interestingly enough, I bought a loose, complete Rocket Blast Batman at a flea market several years back. He was in a Ziplock bag and in very nice condition. I didn't realize his rarity until just now. I still want some of those Deluxe figures, like Polar Blast Batman, because of their interesting color schemes.

haha, yeah you probably got me Caleson, lol. Yeah I was just curious as to how rare they were. I don't really keep up with the value b/c I want to keep my figures for as long as I can. Maybe give to my kids one day...if they're good that is!Smile

Oh and if anybody sees a loose bruce wayne in good condition let me know. I'm on the hunt but no luck as of late!

Did you realize there were three different releases of the Keaton Bruce Wayne figure? The original was in The Dark Knight Collection and included Batman costume armor. Batman Returns saw a direct re-release of this figure as well as the purple-shirted Custom Coupe version that you mentioned. I have a couple loose, complete versions of the regular armored figure myself, but I could see how finding the Coupe version by itself would be tricky. I got the Coupe when it was first released, so I've got the figure.

I doubt that. The character design for The Penguin in BTAS was heavily inspired by DeVito's Penguin, which would likely be the only reason the BTAS Penguin action figure looks similar to DeVito. It's a safe bet that figure was design directly after its animated series counterpart.

Yeah, I don't care much about the supposed monetary "values" either, but knowing them can give you a great idea of the item's rarity. After all, scarcity is usually the biggest factor in measuring collector value.

As for Bruce Wayne, do you want him carded, loose-and-complete, or just loose? I wouldn't think it'd be too hard to get one, and trying a few quick eBay searches, I found several carded. Below is a loose one that's only missing his communicator. As a kid, I absolutely loved this figure... Smile

That's awesome Caleson! I'm actually just looking for a loose and complete figure in good shape. That one would be great to have. I've saw the Purple suit one as well but eithier one would be cool. Wish me luck!wink

I don’t recall any of the Batman Returns figures being rare or hard to find. Even the three Series II figures that they released were easy enough to find on the pegs. A few of the Batman Returns figures were simply the same The Dark Knight Collection figures on new cards.

Perhaps the Bruce Wayne figure that came with the Bruce Wayne Custom Coupe is now the rare one, as you could only get it with the Custom Coupe and if your find the Coupe loose, you might not find the figure that goes with it.

I do recall the Batman Returns series II figures in the clearence bins at TRU and Kaybee for about a year after release just sitting there but then one day gone and the value skyroketed 2x the 4.99 price for awhile. The same goes for TAS Man-Bat another figure no one wanted at first and now he's one of the most valuable and sought after sought after of the line X-men's first issue Storm (black) was another one that sat on clearence forever according to Toyfare 98 she's worth 45.00 dollars maybe more now

But the rarities at least in my neighborhood upon release in 1992 were

Robin
The Penguin
Catwoman (Females are always tough to find)

With Robin being the rarest of the line at that time due to the fact when these figures were released 2 months prior to the film's opening everyone thought that Robin would debut even if it was a cameo but june 19th no Robin and collectors went crazy buying up all the Robin's that they could find I don't know why but they did and it wasn't till christmas 92 in a dumpy Penn. outlet store where my mom found mine.

I honestly don't remember seeing Batman Returns Series II in stores during its initial release, but I actually saw them at TRU in 1997 while buying Batman & Robin merchandise. I picked up Jungle Tracker Batman for the heck of it and still have him carded. It was neat to see the old Returns card in stores again.

I can't recall seeing Batman Returns Robin in stores either. I got him off eBay in winter 2000 I believe. Some of the BTAS figures you mention were probably scarce around here as well. My September '89 ToyFare has BTAS Penguin listed at $80 with a "Price has Gone Up" highlight, so he was probably the rarest of the collection. I got most of my BTAS villains off eBay years later, and I still need Clayface and Phantasm.

No comparison the rarest Kenner figure upon original release mind you has to be BTAS Combat Belt Batman the only show accurate Batman and I believe he waas one per case and sold out of stores faster than hotcakes

I was 6 in 93 when this bad boy was out and I remember seeing him being taken out of the case and on the peg and it was me and a snobby collector or parent racing for him this guy had to be in his 40's I got there first and took him off the shelf but he ripped it out of my little hands the nerve of that @#$hole to tear a toy out of a kid's grasp well I did what any 6 year old boy would have done I cried. the associate who stocked the shelves called management and had the guy banned for life my mom who was with me was outraged that "a grown man with no f&@#ing moral values would shove a child over a f*@#ing toy" the manager outraged over this paid for Bat's and another toy of my choosing out of his own pocket so I got the Joker as well I still remember him grabing his wallet and handing my mother money for the toys. To keep my mom from sueing (at least that's my guess) every time we came into that piticular TRU he would give me 5 bucks to pay for a Batman or any other action figure. Those two though CB Batman and Joker hold a special place in my heart because in a way that store manager was "Batman" he fought injustice and rewarded the innocent in this case with toys these figures I still have today although they have heavy playwear and paint loss I still proudly display them on my shelf and would never give them up for anything in the world.

I can’t believe that some butt munch would rip an action figure away from a kids hand, although I know the feeling. I hunted a BTAS Poison Ivy for weeks only to find her in the hand of a kid on the toy aisle one morning. I did not rip it out of his hand, but I did hope he would put it down and walk away. Sadly his Mom talked him into taking Ivy because he already had so many other Batman figures.

I have 5 Combat Belt Batman figures and I did not think they were that rare. I would buy extras to put in the vehicles. These days they used molded in figures or the vehicles come with figures, but back in the day you had to buy the figures separately.

She actually said that in front of your six-year old ears? mad ...Still, good to see you came out on top.

I honestly don't remember seeing Combat Belt Batman in stores, so you might be right that he was highly scarce. I've always lived several miles away from any stores that sell figures, so they could've been boughten up by the time my mom would take me with her to town. I still dont' own a complete Combat Belt Batman, but it's been on my Wish List. From my experience, a carded version can go somewhat high on eBay - more than most other BTAS figures. Oddly enough, I'm pretty sure I did see the now-scarce Penguin on shelves.

For some reason, when BTAS figures came out, I didn't get too many. Maybe it was because there was little variety of villains in my area, but one of the first figures I got was the bright orange Parachutist Batman for Christmas and then I bought Ninja Robin. Every basic villain figure I own now from the original BTAS line was boughten off eBay no more than six or seven years ago.

Yeah at that time I believe that ninja robin was one of the 1st if not THE 1st variation of robin. I can remember getting it and playing with it all the time. I got that robin dragster around then and he looked pretty cool with the black ninja mask and black cape on while in it.

FYI that black cape looks good on the black and silver superman figure from 96, just so ya know.

Yeah my mom is like a saint but when that brute upset me she let him and the store have it big time to hear those words come out of her mouth really shocked me.

Penguin was easy for my parents to find I got him on my birthday and usually with rare and hard to find toys i was not allowed to open them so I guess he was an easy find I recently found a Robin Dragster MISB in my attic when I moved which was supposed to be given to me for Christmas that year I believe, Dad tells news broke out on radio and TV about the now infamous warehouse fire and how dad rushed out bought another one for me to open on christmas morning I guess he knew about the collectibillity the things my parents did for me to make me happy

So you toys as a kid that you were not allowed to open? While I understand the reasoning it just sound kind of odd to not let a kid open a toy.
