Dr. Jonathan Crane of Arkham Asylum becomes the Scarecrow and uses a Fear Gas he developed to terrorize Gotham City. There are not many Scarecrow figures that have been released and this one is certainly not one of the better ones. It does use the same “glowing eyes” technique that the original Scarecrow figure made by Kenner had. A translucent yellow piece sits where his brain would be and shining light on it from above “lights” up his eyes.This figure also features two “faces”. The head rotates around 180 degrees to switch faces. One face is of the sewn up brown sack over his head, the other face is a reddish tortured soul look with the glowing eyes that looks like he’s just seen Halle Berry’s Catwoman on DVD.Mattel has released a variant of this figure. A “Bloody” version with red sprayed over his chest and arms can be found on the pegs if you’re lucky. It is very hard to find and packs out at one in every other case or so. I don’t like this version as much as the normal figure, but the rarity of it will no doubt cause it to go up in value on the secondary market.
SPECS:
5 1/2” Tall, 11 Points Of Articulation (Head, Shoulders, Elbows, Waist, Hips, Knees). The figure uses the right arm as a lever to switch the head around. The figure comes with a hollow weapon that can be loaded with water to squirt out.
PROS:
Well it’s a Scarecrow and Batman needs a villain. The articulation is good, but not as good as it could be.
CONS:
I’ve never been a big fan of figures with multiple faces. This figure does have a high torn “Elvis” style collar to help hide the face on the back and the sewn sack mask does not have the eye and mouth details stand out as well as the other face.Am I the only one to notice just how big the hands are? The sculpting is decent, but those hands seem too big in comparison to the overall figure.
OVERALL:
This figure is just OK in my book. It’s a must have if you’re a hardcore Batman collector and maybe regular figure collectors will pick one up too, at least the Bloody version to stick away as an investment.There have only been a four other Scarecrow figures released and this is only the second one made by Mattel. Kenner made the first one in the BTAS series, (1993). It was repainted twice, first in The Adventures of BATMAN and Robin Rouges Gallery (1996) and again in Alliance Of Fear (Hasbro TRU Exclusive 4 pack 2002). Then Twister Strike Scarecrow in the Legends of the Dark Knight series (1996). DC Direct released on in the Super Friends BATMAN & Scarecrow Deluxe Action Figure Set (2003). The other version Mattel released was in the 6” Comic line (2004) and only available in Australia so far. All the other versions wore hats, this new figure is the first Scarecrow without his trademark Fedora.There is also another version of the figure coming in upcoming Batman Begins waves. It appears to be the same figure only instead of a Straight Jacket he is wearing a Lab Coat that drapes down to his feet, although the upper body is exactly the same with the Straight Jacket belts. It will come with a bandoleer and a new projectile firing weapon that clips on to his arm. There is no word yet if there will be a “Bloody” variant version of this figure.
